No, I’m not talking about the varsity drag, I’m talking about aging. Is it really so difficult to accept that, unless life has a surprise in store for us, we will all one day be a senior citizen, an elderly person, an old man, an old woman? Apparently for some it is, which brings to mind Dame Judith Dench, who, after winning the Oscar, was asked by a reporter how she felt about getting older.
Of course, what he really meant by the question was ‘what does it feel like to be old?’ and she knew it. Her snappish two-word reply to him was “it’s horrible”. Now, I just happen to think that she has little to gripe about. I mean who had ever heard of her until she had become a senior, gotten a plum movie role, earned an Oscar, and got knighted. Nobody that’s who, at least nobody on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. After all, instead of being a rich, famous, senior she could have wound up being old, alone, and poor. However, enough about Dame Dench, as she, and the title of this piece, are really diversions. A way to lightly approach the serious subject of the somewhat recent phenomenon of aging baby boomers caring for aged parents.
Since Ponce De Leon never did discover the ‘fountain of youth’ and since the youngest of the Baby Boom generation are now in their 40’s, the boomers parents have become a looking glass into the boomers own future. And if you happen to be in your twenties or thirties, trust that how these boomers deal with it, becomes a looking glass into your own future. So how are they dealing with it? Well, a good percentage of them did not buy into ‘out of sight, out of mind’, and have therefore made the choice not to ship their parents off to some senior citizen compound, and are themselves taking care of them. While you may not think this has much to do with you, it actually does because what they are doing is setting the stage for the future of long term home care. Is doing so taking a toll on them? Absolutely it is, but when asked if they would do it again, the majority of them reply that they would. So is it possible, do you suppose, that the Man from Galilee knew what he was talking about when he said ‘it is better to give than to receive’?.
Let’s take a look at that in a different way, so bear with me while I tell you two news stories that have remained with me since the day I first heard them. For the first story, we go back to 1982 when Flight 90 crashed into the ice crusted Potomac River. The world watched helplessly as of the 74 passengers, 6 survivors struggled to stay alive in the freezing water. Of those six, ‘passenger six’ as he was referred to, caught and passed on the lifelines he could have used to save himself. Although his was not the only act of heroism that night, his sacrifice is perhaps the most haunting because of the 74 original passengers; he was the only one to die from drowning. And yes, the other five survived. Next is the news story of two men: The first had slipped off a high bridge and just as he lost his hold on the rail that was keeping him from falling, a second man appeared and grabbed hold of his hand. This second man was then himself in danger of falling but he kept holding on, and holding on, until rescue finally arrived. When a reporter asked this second man why he had put himself in such danger for a complete stranger, he answered, “I felt that if I had let him fall and die, that some important part of me would have died along with him.”
Although these two news stories are a lot more dramatic than children who take up the role of being their parents caretakers, they nevertheless contain in them the same element of the selfless sacrifice of oneself. Considering that for generations advertisers have been feeding Americans a daily diet of self gratification with messages of ‘get’ ’spend’ ‘have’ ‘own’ ‘get more’, the decision of Baby Boomers to do this is rather remarkable. As they have en masse done once before they have again rejected the messages in a search for a more meaningful inner message. And in doing so they exchanged ‘get’ for ‘give’ and in doing that they have tapped into some heroic facet of themselves.

Shingles Symptoms - and Treatments. by Ivan Hince July 23, 2007
Posted by sfaf in Senior Health.add a comment
I can remember quite clearly some forty years ago when a friend told me that her husband had Shingles, and how that he was in great pain, and covered in a terrible rash. At this point I thought nothing about it until recently I was reading an article which compared different types of pain, and Shingles was mentioned.
As I write many different articles about medical health I began to check out what caused it, and why it was ranked as one of the most painful things you can get, so I began to investigate what the symptoms were, and what treatment was available.
Shingles comes from the same virus as the well known Chickenpox which lays dormant in anyone that has had chickenpox, or that has had the chickenpox vaccine. It normally affects older people where the dormant virus travels to the nerve endings in the skin area.
From there the pain starts, and often patients have described the pain as coming in extreme waves that have been likened to that of an electric shock. After this stage the rash appears, which will blister and become very painful. These blisters can be full of bacteria, and great care should be taken with cleanliness.
What causes Shingles?
Several Doctors have different ideas on the causes of Shingles, but if the truth they don’t know. Some say it can start from stress, while others relate it to Cancer, or HIV. Radiation is another possibility, and also mentioned would be that it could be that part of the skin has been damaged in some way that sets the virus off. The most likely cause in my eyes is that the immune system gets severely run down, and that the virus which is normally kept at bay by our immune system, then breaks out.
Shingles Symptoms.
The things to look out for are extreme sensitivity in the skin, which tend to have a burning sensation, and slight itching. After this stage the skin becomes painful, and if you think that you may have shingles a call to your Doctor must be made, as the sooner an antiviral medication is given the easier for the patient it will be.
Care must also be taken should the patient have a form of rash near the nose, or on any part of the face. This is most important to get immediate medical help, as if the virus reaches the eyes it can lead to impaired vision, or a complete loss of sight.
Medical care.
With Shingles the sooner you get medical care the better for the patient it will be. Pain killers are a must, along with things like Antihistamine can help with the itching. Often the Doctor will recommend creams or oils that can stop the blisters from drying out to fast, and in several articles it is believed that cold water compresses bring great relief, and keeps the skin moist.
If possible avoid contact with others that have not had chickenpox, especially if that person is older, and try to wear loose clothing that doesn’t irate the skin.

Why Niacin Is A Small But Vital Part Of Your Anti-Oxidant Rich Diet by Steve Smith July 23, 2007
Posted by sfaf in Senior Health.add a comment
Vitamin B3, commonly known as niacin or nicotinic acid, is one of the B complex of water soluble vitamins needed by the body every day.
In its derivative form of nicotinamide, niacin is required by the body for the production of coenzymes known as, if you’ll forgive the jargon, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP).
The importance of NAD and NADP may be shown by the fact that over 200 of the body’s other enzymes are dependent on an interaction with them for an almost infinite variety of vital functions.
The antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione, for example, are the body’s first line of defence against highly damaging superoxide free radicals and work in a closely complementary fashion. Each of these anti-oxidant enzymes is formed by the body from the amino acids in the proteins in your diet, and each is needed for the others to function correctly.
This holistic functioning of the body is also reflected in the dietary requirements for the successful production of the enzymes. As well as a good supply of first-class protein, ie that containing each of the essential amino acids, a wide variety of vitamins and minerals are required to allow optimal levels of enzyme manufacture.
So for example, vitamin E cannot do its work in the absence of an adequate supply of active vitamin C. In its turn, vitamin C cannot remain active without the presence of glutathione. And although it is the most prevalent anti-oxidant enzyme in the body, glutathione cannot act effectively in the absence of the trace mineral, selenium, and vitamins of the B complex, including B3 and B6.
In addition to its importance in assisting with the manufacture of anti-oxidant enzymes, there is also some evidence that levels of niacin above those required for the avoidance of deficiency may have some protective effect against the DNA cell damage that may be a precursor to the development of cancer.
Intense attention has also been paid to the apparent effectiveness of niacin (or nicotinic acid) in reducing blood levels of Low Density Lipids (LDLs), the so-called “bad” cholesterol, an effect recognised since 1955. It has also been demonstrated by numerous research reports that levels of High Density Lipids (HDLs), or “good” cholesterol may be raised by niacin. This has given rise to extravagant claims for niacin as a natural alternative to conventional heart drugs, including statins. But it has to be stressed that the beneficial effects appear to require pharmacological doses of several grams a day, which should only be taken under medical supervision.
In fact the recommended upper safe level of niacin intake has been set by the Food and Nutrition Board at 35 mg a day to avoid the unpleasant flushing of the face and body which is a common side effect of high doses. At the other end of the scale, the most important extreme deficiency disease relating to vitamin B3 is known as pellagra.
Symptoms of pellagra affect the skin, the digestive system and the brain, so sufferers may develop a heavily pigmented rash on areas of the skin exposed to sunlight; they may experience vomiting and diarrhea and symptoms similar to the early signs of dementia. In the most extreme cases pellagra can even be fatal if allowed to progress untreated.
Fortunately, however, as little as 11 mg of niacin a day has been shown to be sufficient for the prevention of pellagra, and the disease should never now be seen in affluent Western societies. But the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) has been set at a slightly higher, safety, level of 16 mg for men and 14 mg for women To put this in perspective, a small 3oz serving of lean chicken or turkey will provide between 5 and 7 mg, beef 3 mg; and salmon or tuna (a particularly rich source) between 8 and 11 mg. An unfortified cup of cereal may provide 5 mg, fortified perhaps as much 20 mg or more.
Milk, nuts, beans and leafy green vegetables may be useful secondary sources, but it should be noted, however, that unrefined grains such as corn or wheat (even in the form of wholemeal bread) are relatively poor sources because the niacin they contain is not easily absorbed by the human digestive system.
The RDA of 16mg should be easily achieved through a normally well balanced daily diet, and should be enough to prevent deficiency disease, but as always in nutrition, mere absence of disease is not at all the same thing as optimal health. So the sensible approach to supplementation, and the one recommended by numerous authorities to ensure maximum benefits, appears to be to take a multi-vitamin or B complex supplement sufficient to raise niacin intake to around 20 mg a day.

Nexium and Acid Reflux by T. Houser June 28, 2007
Posted by sfaf in Senior Health.add a comment
Acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a problem that almost everyone experiences at sometime in his or her life. Acid reflux, also known as reflux esophagitis, is an inflammation of the esophagus caused by the regurgitation of the stomach contents. Acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. Many people experience acid reflux frequently and severely. One out of ten adults experience acid reflux on a daily basis.
Treating acid reflux by medication causes the suppression of stomach acid. Acid reflux medications are promoted as miracle cures for millions of acid reflux sufferers.
These drugs are huge moneymakers for the pharmaceutical companies. Prilosec is known as the original ‘Purple Pill’. It became the top selling prescription drug for senior citizens in the world. Its manufacturer (AstraZeneca) earns six billion a year from sales of the ‘Purple Pill’.
Once the patent on Prilosec expired, the Drug Company spent five hundred million dollars on a marketing campaign to move their customers to their next expensive ‘Purple Pill’, which is called Nexium. It is hard to watch television without seeing an ad for the the ‘Purple Pill’.
There have been studies done and experts agree that Nexium was hardly more effective than the original drug, Prilosec. The pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca managed to transfer over forty percent of its Prilosec patients to Nexium.
People must be aware of when a drug is actually needed by your body and when it is just a marketing tool to increase a drug companies profits.
Drugs do not solve the problem of acid reflux they merely mask the problem. However, the drugs are effective. Otherwise, the drug companies would not be making huge profits. Drugs such as Prilosec and Prevacid are what they call “proton pump inhibitors”. These drugs dramatically reduce the amount of hydrochloric acid in your stomach. This also reduces an important defense mechanism against food-borne infections and increases the likelihood of food poisoning. If you are not digesting your food properly, you also increase your risk for nearly every other chronic degenerative disease.
At Howard Hughes Medical Institute, scientists performed two studies by reducing the amount of stomach acid in lab mice. These studies proved that reducing hydrochloric acid in your stomach could be the wrong thing to do.
In conclusion, if you are an acid reflux sufferer, please consider natural methods to cure your acid reflux symptoms. Methods such as a proper diet are a positive step towards a cure. Nexium and other like drugs are not cures for acid reflux they merely mask the problem. Please consult your Doctor if you feel you have the symptoms of acid reflux.

Reason why you should use Rail passes - by Clint Jhonson June 28, 2007
Posted by sfaf in Senior Travel.add a comment
Most of the people who plan their holidays have a budget they need to take in account and make the most of, so saving money on some things like the Rail passes, gives them the opportunity to spend more money on something else they want for that trip. Discount train fares are one of the best options one has if planning to take a route that is accessible by train. Taking the train saves you a lot of trouble like where to park the car, how much the parking costs, what are the chances of having my car stolen or broken into.
If you don’t have a car thinking of discount train fares is probably the best solution, even better than considering traveling by bus. Traveling by train is cheap, very comfortable, and more enjoyable because you can take your friends along, go, and have a drink for example while you travel to your next destination. If you travel alone or even if you travel with your friends, there are ways to pay less than the actual train fare price. If you travel alone and are under 26 years old, you get a discount just for being young and once you know your route you can purchase one or more train passes.
In order to get one of these passes you have to have an itinerary, know your destination stops, find out if there is a minimum of stay in each place you stop before you can take the next train to your next destination. You also need to find out if you have any restrictions at certain trains when you get a train pass, how many days is the pass valid, or if there are any conditions when buying the pass like first class or second-class train pass. Some train passes are not age conditioned so if you are over 26 make sure you ask and see if they have them on the route you plan to travel.
There are usually different kinds of Rail passes, you just need to find out which one is the best for you. Some of them let you take an unlimited amount of rides in a specific period that can be defined in days or months. Getting the right pass for you depends mainly on the trip you plan to take, the duration of the whole trip, the duration of each stop if the pass conditions it. The discount train fares are usually named flexipass, discovery pass, explorer pass, youth pass, select pass, and so on. Whichever you think of getting ask first about what it offers in the price as well as the limitations it has.
If you are traveling in a group, two or more is a group, you can get a group train pass that is cheaper than buying individual train passes. If the people in your group are under 26 years old, you get an additional discount to your fare. When purchasing the passes you should make sure, you insure them so you can get a new one issued in case you lose them or they are stolen from you. The good thing is that most of these passes can be extended or refunded if they are not validated, thus you lose about 15% of the price of the discount train fares instead of the whole amount of money.
Train passes are also offered to senior citizens, but like in the case of any other pass, they need to know ahead where they are traveling, the places they plan to travel and in what order and they have to find out which pass suits their needs best and allows them to be more flexible while in the trip. If you are traveling with little kids, usually younger than five years old you should know that in some countries, they are not required to have a train ticket or they have to pay only a certain percentage of the ticket. The same applies to children aged between 5 and 10 or 12 depending from region to region.

IDENTITY THEFT - by Devon Gartenhaus-Cohen June 26, 2007
Posted by sfaf in General.1 comment so far
Identity theft is such a hot topic these days. With the increased technology and creativity by thieves, we are faced with the responsibility to protect ourselves. There are many services available, but before you shell out beaucoup bucks on these services, really understand what they do and what type of value they add. According to Pat Regner in an article in Money magazine, “there are limits on what most ID protection services can do to soften the blow.” He continues, “None of this is 100% protection - no such thing in our data-drenched world. Yet credit-monitoring services say they can close the gap. This is true. But by how much? And what’s that worth? Over an adult lifetime, a deluxe monitoring service that watches all three bureaus may cost you more then $9,000 in today’s dollars.”
Some people are at greater risk than others. For most people, the tips below can be enough to keep themselves safe, however there are no guarantees. Pat Regner contends that, “If you want to spend money feeling safer in life generally, you may benefit far more from, say, long-term disability insurance. And yet most people have too little of it.”
One last thought: Isn’t it ironic that the same credit card companies that bombard you with the junk mail that you are supposed to shred, are the ones trying to sell you the ID protection?
Ways to protect your personal information:
- Don’t give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet unless you have initiated the contact or you are sure you know whom you are dealing with.
- Don’t carry your Social Security card or Birth Certificate on you; keep it in a secure place.
- Secure personal information at home, especially if you have roommates, employees, or outside help doing work in your home.
- Guard your mail and trash from theft. SHRED ANYTHING WITH PERSONAL INFORMATION ON IT THAT YOU ARE DISPOSING OF (ex. Credit card receipts, copies of credit applications, bank statements, etc.)
- Place passwords on your credit card, bank, and phone accounts. Use passwords that are difficult to figure out. Avoid using birthdays, social security numbers, your mother’s maiden name, or a pet’s name. Use a combination of random numbers and letters and keep those passwords in a secure place.
- Give out your social security number only when absolutely necessary.
- Pay attention to billing cycles. Follow up with creditors if your bills do not arrive on time.
- Be wary of promotional scams.
- Check your credit reports at least once ever six months.
